Detachable devices are not enduringly attached to the teeth and can be taken out by the patient at any time. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the dental practice in Europe was dependant largely on the use of detachable devices. Nevertheless, over the past few decades, there has been a notable deterioration in their use, essentially as a consequence of more effective fixed instruments being ready and an increase in the numbers of dental specialists capable of using them.

However, simple detachable appliances hold a place in contemporary orthodontic practice, usually as an addition to established appliance treatment or for use in the preservation phase of therapy. In particular, a group of predominantly detachable practical appliances, used principally in the administration of class II malocclusion, have experienced a significant increase in popularity in contemporary time. In addition, new therapy systems using vacuum-formed detachable appliances, not only for preservation but also for effective tooth implant in bangalore movement have been improved.

Mechanical strategies should be regarded when employing a force to any tooth with a spring:

• It should be presented at 90 degrees to the long axis of the tooth and through a surface parallel to it; otherwise, a perpendicular force is included, which will lead to displace the instrument or interfere the tooth.

• It should pass as close to the center of resistance as possible to reduce rotation.

So, more moderate forces can be given by extending the length of the wire or decreasing its breadth; however, this will make the spring more sensitive to distortion and more susceptible to breakages. This can be restricted to a degree by protecting the arm of the spring with the acrylic baseplate or covering it in steel tubing.

Classification of springs:

Based on the presence or absence of helix they can be classified as –

  • Simple without helix.
  • Compound with helix.

Based on the presence of loop or helix they can be classified as –

  • Helical springs ( Have a helix)
  • Looped springs ( Have a Loop)

Based on the nature of stability of the springs they can be classified as:

  • Self-supported spring.
  • Supported springs.

Ideal requisites of a spring:
  • It should be easily adjustable.
  • The spring should be simple to fabricate.
  • It should fit into the available space without discomfort to the patient.
  • It should be easy to clean.
  • It should apply force of required magnitude and direction.
  • It should not slip or dislodge when placed over a sloping tooth surface.
  • It should be roust.
  • It should remain active over a long period of time.

Components of a spring:
  • Arm
  • Coil
  • Tag
Types of spring:
  • Finger spring
  • Buccal canine spring
  • Springs for arch expansion
  • ‘Z’ spring, ‘T’ spring.
  • Cantilever, Double cantilever spring.
  • Springs for retraction.

The components of a spring are:
  • Active arm
  • Coil
  • Tag
Factor to be considered in designing a spring:
  • Diameter of wire: Flexibility of the spring to a large extent depends upon diameter of F=D4/L3
  • F = force applied by the spring
  • D = Diameter of wire.
  • L = Length of wire.

Dental clinic in Indiranagar:-

Length of wire: Force can be reduced by improving the length of the wire. Thus springs that are longer are more compliant and persists to be active for a long duration of time. By doubling the length of wire force can be decreased by eight times.

Patient comfort: Spring should be convenient for the patient in design, shape, size or force production. The patient should be able to enter the appliance with the spring in the proper position.

The direction of tooth movement: The direction of tooth mobility is defined by the point of contact between the spring and the tooth. Palatially set spring is utilised for labial movement. Buccally installed spring is used when the tooth is to be relocated palatal and in a mesiodistal region.

Palatal finger spring :

  • Used to move a tooth mesiodistally.
  • The direction of tooth movement is perpendicular to the tangent line at the point of contact.
  • Coil should be located on the perpendicular line drawn at mid-point of the path of tooth movement.
  • Usually made of 0.5 or 0.4 mm stainless steel round wire.
  • Activated by opening the coil so that when the appliance is seated the coil wound up and deliver force.

Buccal Canine Spring:

  • Used to move the tooth palatally and distally.
  • Useful when buccally erupted canine cannot be engaged from the palatal aspect by finger spring.
  • Poor stability, difficult to adjust.
  • May irritate the tissues or uncomfortable if the coil is located too high up in the sulcus.
  • The tag should pass the occlusal table as close as possible and above the contact point or premolar tooth.
  • Made of 0.7 mm stainless steel round wire.
  • Adjust by closing the coil.
  • Buccal canine retractors are constructed in 0.7-mm stainless steel, reduced to 0.5-mm if sheathed. These springs can be used to retract buccally placed maxillary canines; however, when activated it is mechanically difficult to apply force directly to the mesial surface of the tooth.

Springs for moving teeth labial and buccally:

  • ‘Z’ spring.
  • ‘T’ spring.
  • Modified finger spring. (cranked spring)
  • Cantilever springs

The wire should be supported by a guard (guide) wire so that it will remain contact at the desired position on the tooth.

Dentist in Indiranagar – Made of 0.5 to 0.7 mm stainless steel round wire, depending upon the length of wire and the design of a spring.

Z spring:

  • The Z-spring is constructed in 0.5-mm stainless steel wire and generally used to move one or two teeth labially. Activation is achieved by pulling the spring away from the base plate at an angle of approximately 45°, which will tend to displace the appliance away from the palate; good anterior retention is therefore important.
  • The ‘Z’ spring is also called double cantilever spring. It is made up of 0.5 mm wire.
  • The spring consists of two coils of very small internal diameter. It should be placed perpendicular to the palatal surface of the tooth.
  • The spring can be made for the movement of a single incisor or two incisors.
  • It is activated by opening helices by about 2-3 mm at a time.

T spring:

  • T-springs are constructed in 0.5-mm stainless steel wire and used to move individual teeth either labially or buccally. Activation is again produced by pulling the spring away from the baseplate and therefore retention also needs to be good.
  • It is made of 0.5 mm wire.
  • The spring consist of T shaped arm which is embedded in acrylic.
  • It is used for buccal movement of pre-molar and some canine.
  • It is activated by pulling the free end of the T toward the intended direction of tooth movement.

Cranked single cantilever spring:

  • It is constructed with 0.5 mm wire.
  • The spring consist of coil, close to its emergence from base plate.
  • The spring is cranked to keep it clear of the other teeth.
  • It is used to move teeth labially.

Coffin Spring:

  • A coffin spring provides a useful alternative to a screw for expansion. This heavy spring is constructed in 1.25-mm wire and activated by pulling the two halves of the appliance apart manually or flattening the spring with pliers. Coffin springs deliver high forces that will tend to displace the appliance and good retention is important.
  • It is made of 1.2 mm wire.
  • It consists of a U or Omega shaped wire placed in the mid-palatal region with retentive arm incorporated in base plates.
  • It is re-tended by Adams clasp in a molar.
  • It is used in slow dentoalveolar arch expansion in a patient with upper arch constriction or in uni-lateral cross-bite.
